From a Warfare: 1917 fan
I am a huge 1917 fan, but this game didn't quite live up to expectations. Firstly, you "improved" the game by making it needlessly complicated. The three routes are an interesting spin, but ultimately don't make the game more enjoyable. Secondly, why does cover only hold one unit? Part of the fun of 1917 was strategically sending all of your men out of the trench at once for a massive assault. You simply can't do that here, all you can do is supply a steady stream of men to get mowed down.
Another major issue is that you have not fixed the unit balancing. The "Conscript" upgrade simply makes this worse. Buying Riflemen for 100 and the occasional Assault Squad for 300 is all you need to win the game. Once Tanks come around, replacing Assault Squads with Panzershreck/Bazooka teams will let you steamroll everything. The Officers and their Air Support, while ultimately the most strategic thing you can do, are way too expensive and ineffective to be used effeciently. MG34/.30 Cal teams are somewhat effective, but will ultimately get zerged by a steady stream of cheap units. Sharpshooters aren't even worth ranting about, they are so terribly ineffective for their massive cost.
Considering that winning the game is all about "zerging" the enemy with massive quantities of cheap units, I found them taking cover at everything along the way really annoying. I found myself not even focusing on the action, having to manually force every unit i sent over each and every bit of cover along the way.
One thing I did like, though it doesn't seem to be very popular, is the addition of Resource Costs and each unit being on a seperate cooldown. This does fix the clumsy system in 1917 and doesn't really have any drawbacks that I can see.
The game has some massive potential, but I'll be sticking with Warfare 1917 for a timewaster. This game simply doesn't have the same fun factor 1917 did.
Verdict: 4/10
